It has been a dreadfully long month. Mike has been super busy since the last week of April and the entire month of May has been even crazier. There were a few weeks there that I only saw him maybe 3 hours total for the entire week, and that's not an exaggeration. During earning season there were several days he woke up at 3am and rushed out the door and didn't get home until 11 or 12. Seriously, almost 24 hour work days. He'd come home, shower, and sleep for 1-2 hours only to start all over again. I don't know how he functions on such little sleep. Truly. If he comes out of this month with a meth addiction, I'll totally know why.
Obviously the worst downside to him being so busy is that we haven't had any time together for sooooo long. Right after his busy week dealing with earnings reports, he took off on a business trip to Florida for a week. We got to talk occasionally, though he was usually in meetings and then, because of the 3 hour time difference, he was usually in bed by the time I got the kids to bed and had a minute of quiet time to chat. When we did get a chance to talk, I enjoyed hearing about the many shenanigans he took part in during his trip. And he always had a funny story to share. It sounded like the humidity was pretty intense, so he spent a lot of the time driving in an air conditioned car. But for fun during one long drive, he told me how he decided to turn the heat on full blast for the last hour of his trip. Stepping out into the humid heat of Florida really wasn't that bad after that. Oh, the things that kid does for entertainment. :) And I got a real life gator head as a souvenir. I can't think of anything more romantic than that as a gift.
After the Florida trip, he was home for another week but I barely saw him due to his insane work schedule. When that week was up, he took another week long trip to NYC, Boston, and Connecticut. Lucky for him, the train derailment took place just a few days prior to his departure. As he was about to board his train in Boston he texted me a picture of it and said, "Hopefully we don't crash. Honestly, who crashes a train? Seems like the easiest thing to NOT crash." I lol'd because I know he was just trying to reassure me and be light hearted, but I'll admit I worried about him non-stop. Though we were both grateful he survived the commute, I think he was pretty annoyed by the whole thing. On Facebook he wrote, "So my train ride from Boston to New York has become two trains, a bus, and another train. This is the best day of my life!" That sums up the amazingness of the trip right there. Gotta love that boy's sarcasm.
We hardly got to talk to each other while he was gone on that trip too. But not on account of our lack of trying. Whenever I tried to call him he was on a train and the announcer was giving instructions over the loud speaker in a high pitched voice laced with an East coast accent. Needless to say, neither one of us could hear the other, so we gave up. If he wasn't en route to a new destination, he was in a meeting. Also, I think the time change killed us. He called me back at his hotel after all his meetings had ended for the day, but I was usually in the middle of making dinner and/or wrangling with the children. On one very special night, we had just started talking when the smoke alarm went off. Unfortunately, I had been putting off cleaning whatever crap fell at the bottom of my oven, so every time I used it, it continued to burn the already charred, incomprehensible food that got stuck there. I pinched the phone between my ear and shoulder and frantically went around the house opening windows and fanning at the smoke detector with a cookie sheet. The kids began to freak out and cry (the reaction that always follows the sound of the smoke detector) and I was sweating buckets from running around just trying to keep things from falling apart. When the noise subsided, I sighed deep into the phone, feeling frustrated that our conversation was again interrupted. Mike joked, "I sure have missed your home cookin' while I've been away." If it wasn't for his wonderful sense of humor, I might've cried instead of laughed. I told him I'd try to call back later when things settled down. And once again, when I had finally got the children to bed, it was much too late for Mike to talk, at least to have an in-depth conversation about the day's events. Instead he asked in a sleepy voice, "So what kind of knock-off designer crap do you want me to get you on Canal Street? A Chanel bag, Oakleys, or a gold Rolex?" I laughed, and told him I missed him. "I miss you too, babe" he said, "but I guess I better get some sleep. Early morning meetings tomorrow." Yes, I knew that he needed to sleep. And so did I. "Good night," I whispered. "I love you." Then the phone went "click."
This whole month has just been a blur. I don't know how single parents do it. I mean, how do they go to a job AND still be a parent? Like, a good parent? I feel like I was barely getting by as a "good" parent while Mike was away. "You wanna eat ice cream for dinner? Why not?" "You wanna stay up until 10:30pm? Sure, I'm okay with that." Geez, I was hardly productive most days he was gone. "Do I really need to get dressed for the day? I have nobody to impress," I'd rationalize. Although, it was nice to stay up reading in bed with the light on. Nobody to disturb, right? And I didn't miss Mike's alarm going off at 3:30 every morning. Plus, without Mike there, I could sprawl out on the bed as much as I wanted and sleep in the shape of a starfish if I felt so inclined. Our queen size bed felt as big as an ocean with just me in it. However, the nights were a lot colder without someone to cuddle next too. I have to say, the benefits of having him gone didn't really outweigh the disadvantages. I hate being away from him.
Now that he's back from his NYC trip, I still haven't seen much of him. This week is all about studying for the level 3 CFA exam. He's been studying for several months, but now it's crunch time. His test is on June 3rd, and if he passes he will officially be done with it and get a new title! N. Michael Bates, CFA. Sounds catchy, right? Every spare minute is used to study, take practice quizzes, and then study some more. I will be so friggin' happy when this month ends and his test is over with and we can enjoy a carefree summer. I just have to get through the next 5 days!!! Wish me luck, friends.

Life....and stuff
Jacob likes to punch himself in the eye.

Black and white cuteness.

Not a fan of bath-time.

Mike turned the big 2-8 on July 13th. I made sure to "Rick Roll" him twice. And both times he fell for it. I rock.
I made a basket full of treats with balloons and a card with the best Dwight Schrute quote on it. I also made him a cake (which Mike's mom frosted and decorated) and his favorite Indian food.

Then we ended up at the grassy area near the Civic Center where the farmer's market is held. I hired a couple musicians to play a private concert for us. They played "our song" and a few DMB covers because that's Mike's favorite artist.

Then we busted out the "booze."

True Confessions by "Mick"
So I was reading up on Pat and Jauna Cabbage's blog and found a "True Confessions" post, detailing all the dirty deeds from their pasts that they'd hid from others (mostly the 'rents). I thought it was sweet enough to justify making my own. Anyone else who feels the need to air out their dirty laundry, make sure and leave a comment so I know aboot it!
Here goes:
1) When I was a kid I had a fascination with egging things. I probably threw a couple hundred eggs off our deck onto the neighbor's patio and hot tub. One time when the urge to egg came on and I knew the 'rents were on to me, I went and egged my own bedroom window so they wouldn't suspect me. I'm pretty sure my bro Dave took the heat for that one.
2) When I was in the fourth grade I was pretty resistant to the idea of doing homework, and apparently my teacher thought that marching me to the library and calling my Mom every day would help in that process. Instead of just doing my homework like I should have, I ended up taking our phone off the hook every morning before I left for school so my teacher would just get a busy signal when she called. Yeah, she was pretty ticked.
3) I peed my pants in the fifth grade. It was the end of the day and everyone was reporting the number of pages they'd read over the previous month, and I really had to go. I wanted to just sit down and focus on holding it, but the pressure of standing up was just too much for me. I ended up peeing and then try to convince Dave on the way home that I had been playing in the snow and that's why my pants were wet. Wadayagonado.
4) When I was around nine years old I used to test out the saying that cats always land on their feet by tossing the neighbor's cats off our deck whenever they wandered into our yard. I discovered the saying only held true when I softly lobbed them off, but not when I totally chucked them straight down. Yeah, maybe I'm lucky I didn't grow up to be a serial killer, eh?
5) About a month after getting to the first area on the mish, I really had to duke it but my companion was in the shower so I ended up lining an office trash can with a Wal-Mart bag and took care of business. That event marked the official end to my self respect....
Ok, I'm thinking on that note I'll call it good. Don't judge me.

LOVE is an understatement
I have such a sweet husband. With how much I hate being in the kitchen, it's nice to have a guy that likes to cook (and bake.) Today he made these awesomely delicious orange chocolate scones from scratch. It was his first time making scones and I think they turned out very yummy. Thanks babe, for always making stuff for me to feed my face! I love ya!

Ode To My Husband

Just thinking I am a pretty lucky broad. Mike is an amazing partner in life. I feel so blessed to be married to him! Here are some reasons why I love my sweetie so much.
1. He is a very hard worker. He has a wonderful work ethic and does his best at whatever job he's given. It is because of his hard work that I am blessed to stay home with our lovable Vessel.
2. He never complains about it.
3. He is a great cook.
4. He always puts me and V first.
5. He always listens to me when I go off on one of my rants.
6. He's hella funny! He cracks me up continually.
7. He's bloody good at Dr. Mario.
8. He works hard to fulfill the responsibilities of his church calling.
9. He's an optimist.
10. He likes to have a good time.
11. Vessel adores him.
12. He is very spiritual and very knowledgeable. He is such a strength to me and can melt any doubts I have with his unwaivering testimony.
13. He likes to keep the peace.
14. He thinks about things long and hard before making an important decision.
15. He knows big words. I'm always like, "honey, what does this mean?" And he has the definition stored somewhere in his brain.
16. He's easy on the eyes (i.e. he's HOT)
17. He helps me wash the dishes.
18. He motivates me to be a better person.
19. He gives me room to grow and develop my talents and find my own way when I need to.
20. He is always up for trying something new. For instance, if something sounds incredibly weird (i.e. gross) on a menu, he'll want to order that exact thing.
21. He's a "curb kicker."
22. He does the grocery shopping.
23. He's excellent with money and ensures that we make wise financial decisions.
24. He's not afraid of a challenge.
25. His kisses make me melt.
26. He's always willing to give me a back rub.
27. He gives me compliments all the time.
28. He has great taste in music.
29. He works hard to achieve his goals. He will find a way to get what he wants in life.
30. He's got crazy names for people and things, which always makes me laugh.
31. He never criticizes me.
32. He likes to exercise, be active and play one on one sports with me.
33. He does random acts of kindness for me and others.
34. He is very loyal and trustworthy.
35. And forgiving.
36. He shaves before he kisses me.
37. He's got killer dance moves.
38. He's got mad banjo playing skillz.
39. Even though he has a fear of heights, he'll go rock climbing with me or anything else involving high places.
40. He balances me out. His strengths are my weaknesses.
There's plenty more, but to save you all from dying of boredom reading a super long mushy list about my baby, I'll stop here. :)

Mike Hits the Big 2-5
So, this post is a bit late, but as Steph says "you'll have that." Last Friday the 13th was Mike's 25th birthday. He's pretty much a geezer now. So for his birthday, V and I surprised him with a treasure hunt in the morning before he headed off to work. We stayed up the night before writing clues to put all around the house to help him locate his presents. We got him an electric wok (that's right folks, he seriously wanted a wok, how could I deny him?), the game RISK 2210 A.D., and a few books he "hinted" that he wanted.
While he was at work I made him a black forest cake and bought his favorite ice cream: mint chocolate chip. After he got off work I had already arranged for a babysitter (which he had no idea about) and I took him to Boondocks. Well, unfortunately that place was.....a little on the crowded side, so we ended up bailing. We went out to dinner instead. Being Mike's birthday and all, he got to pick the restaurant. You guys all familiar with Famous Dave's? Well, it was our first time there, but Mike was really in the mood for BBQ. There was a big mounted moose head on the wall right next to us. Charming, right? We couldn't stop staring at it. They served our meal on the lid of a trash can. I'm not going to lie, it was pretty classy. It was actually fun and nice to get out without the baby for awhile.
Later that night I invited Shanna and Scott over for cake and ice cream. They sang Mike a birthday song and gave him some pretty interesting gifts. Let's see....Nintendo mints, candy bacon, a Mallow Burger, Mallow Fries with Kandy Ketchup, and a "grow your own Buddha." I think overall, Mike was pretty impressed. Hope you had a wonderful birthday babe!!
